One of many examples :
We were once called in by a hospital for our know how. In spite of
numerous efforts by personnel both within and outside the hospital, they
just couldn't manage to settle a temperature control problem within the
operating rooms.
Surgeons were always complaining that it was either too hot or too cold.
The hospital therefore called us in to try to settle this control
problem.
In spite of numerous checks, everything seemed to function properly.
However, there were always major temperatures differences, especially
when the system was under a light load. We therefore had the original
hospital construction plans brought out in order to check the capacity of
the equipment installed.
We then noticed that the valves linked to the thermostats were much too
big in relation to their calculated flow coefficient Cv. The client
therefore replaced the valves with ones having a flow coefficient equal
to the original calculations, and since then, it's perfectly comfortable.
However, over the last few years, everyone had replaced those valves with
ones having an identical diameter, but no one ever thought about
considering the flow coefficient.
